The EPRD Blogger tested out the newly-opened I-70 bike trail from Genesee to the Evergreen Parkway exit on the day the ribbon was cut, on Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2016.
The West End of the trail is extremely windy (as in,winds around) and hilly. We passed a cyclist walking toward El Rancho, the first flat tire on the new trail. Only along one short stretch could we even see I-70; mostly, the trail meandered along the old Route 40 and next to parkland. On the west end, be careful coming out onto Rainbow Hill Road, as motorists are not used to looking for cyclists there. (From there, it's only half a mile to a beer at El Rancho!)
It was a wonderfully safe and pleasant experience compared to riding along 75 mile-per-hour traffic on I-70.
This critical link of bike trail between Genesee and El Rancho opened on Sept. 28, meaning cyclists no longer have to ride in the breakdown of I-70 between Evergreen and Genesee. The trail was a cooperative project of the Colorado Department of Transportation, Jefferson County and Denver Mountain Parks.
A cyclist now can travel from Denver past Glenwood Springs strictly on old highways, other frontage roads and bike paths and never have to access I-70. The hilly Evergreen end starts on Rainbow Hill Road, and the trail features a new bison lookout area, although there were no bison in evidence.
It was a wonderfully safe and pleasant experience compared to riding along 75 mile-per-hour traffic on I-70.
