Engineers have built a robot that can verify whether someone is wearing their mask to protect themselves from the coronavirus.
Pepper makes recommendations
At the same time, if the robot is not wearing it, then it will kindly remind him to use it. This 120cm-high robot is an upgraded version of Pepper that has "human" features and is already "working" in some countries, welcoming visitors to shops, showrooms and elsewhere.
Pepper's camera scan the people approaching it and, if he finds that the bottom of their face is uncovered, the phrase is heard: "You should always wear your mask properly." If he notices that the visitor is complying with the suggestion, the robot welcomes: "Thank you for wearing your mask."
According to RES – ICM, the goal is not to police the robot whether or not people wear the mask but to remind, always politely, that it should do so, said Jonathan Bouria, the head of the Sales for Europe division of SoftBank Robotics, the company that manufactures Pepper.
"Shops are forced to put people in their entrance, many employees, to ensure that everyone wears their mask and sometimes this causes a lot of stress. With the robot some of them can focus on their normal tasks,' he explained.
"We are human beings. Sometimes I take off my mask when I get off the bus and forget to wear it again when I get to the office. The robot is a reminder. We can all make mistakes or forget," Boyria concluded.
