MINISTER OF TRANSPORT - PLANS TO INTRODUCE TRAMS IN CYPRUS

 Filenews 21 September 2020

The plans for the introduction of trams in Cyprus and the rail link between cities, ports and airports, developed among other things in today's teleconference at the Conference of his EU counterparts, the Minister of Transport, Giannis Karusos.

"The Republic of Cyprus recognises that railways can play an important role in improving the efficiency of the transport of goods and people, for short and long distances," the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Giannis Karousos, told his counterparts today at a teleconference of european Union transport ministers. The Minister pointed out that in order to ensure the resilience of the EU economy, both the role of the railways and other alternative mobility instruments should be strengthened.

In a speech, the Minister also said that railways can contribute to the fulfilment of the policy to control the negative effects of climate change on the European Union.

"Cyprus is an island state and does not have a railway infrastructure yet. However, it has carried out extensive studies and has future plans to introduce trams in dense urban areas as well as a rail link connecting the main cities as well as the island's international ports and airports" pointed out Mr Karusos.

Mr Karusos also referred to the Shift2Rail initiative as an opportunity to finance the above projects, the cost of which is estimated at EUR 1.2 billion and the required level of state funding is estimated at 50 % of this. "Such efforts are fully compatible with the objectives of the White Paper on the transport of passengers and goods by rail. By connecting all key airports and ports to the rail network by 2050 and linking the railway to urban areas using state-of-the-art trams, the use of cars in the European Union using 'conventional fuels' can be halved, Mr Karusos pointed out.

Finally, the Minister stated that Cyprus supports the efforts made to improve the safety and competitiveness of European railways.
