ART IN ACTION - TALA

From Cyprus Mail 14/4/16.  Article by Bejay Browne

TALA council has joined forces with ‘Pafos2017’ to encourage young artists from Paphos to use their imagination and participate in a community project to decorate bare walls found close to the local amphitheatre.

The event will take place on Friday and Saturday at Tala Amphitheatre car park between 10am-4pm.
Erica Charalambous, the community involvement and development officer of the European Capital of Culture Organisation- ‘Pafos2017’ said it was a good way to enable youngsters to express their creativity, help improve the surroundings and to transform an ordinary wall into a vibrant art work.
The call for participation went out to all schools in Paphos both state and private. All paints being used are eco-friendly, water based paints, specifically for outdoor use.

Tala councillor, Cathy Delaney said that she first came up with the idea to brighten up bare walls of Tala amphitheatre car park and thought that it would make a good community project.  “The idea is to tidy up an ugly area and allow all ages and abilities to brighten up the community. The theme is nature and wildlife, as the space is on the edge of a park,” she said.

Delaney added that members of the public would also be able to help and fill in any gaps left by the school children. “It will be like painting by numbers as the ideas will have already been decided and outlined,” she said.

Three young talented Paphos artists have been tasked with taking charge of the project, under the mentorship of a number of older, well established artists living in the area, according to Charalambous.

“Charis Christoforou, Nicolas Charalambides and Salomi Abdou will be leading the groups and taking advice to ensure sketches blend together and the overall result is a cohesive one,” she said.
This is the first time the artists will be taking charge of a project.

Delaney said that the three young artists would also paint a design on the amphitheatre wall which faces the main road.  “This is a plain concrete wall and is also in desperate need of brightening up. Many people living in Tala are still not aware that we have an amphitheatre there,” she said.
In addition, the councillor said that a blank wall at the Tala welfare centre would also be decorated by the artists.
