SMS TEXT SCAMS VIA MOBILE PHONE

 

Police warned the public on Tuesday over risks related to any SMS sent to mobile phones from an unknown source.

The warning came following complaints from citizens who received text messages from “their bank”, asking them to provide personal and account details.

Messages appear to come from both the Bank of Cyprus and the Hellenic Bank.

The text includes a link, which supposedly connects individuals to their bank account where they were asked to enter their user ID and password.

The message says Account Notification, http://mobile-bankofcyprus.net or Account on hold, http://mobile-hellenicbank.com.

Both the Bank of Cyprus and the Hellenic Banks are urging their customers to delete all such messages, stressing that they would never ask customers for any personal details through emails, pop-up windows and banners.

The Bank of Cyprus has asked for any suspicious emails to be forwarded to abuse@bankofcyprus.com

Bank of Cyprus customers who think they may have revealed their personal details should contact the bank immediately on 800 00 800 or +357 22128000 if calling from abroad Monday to Friday between 7.45 am and 9.30 pm.

Hellenic Bank customers who may have disclosed their information can contact 8000 9999 or +357 22 500500 and change their passwords immediately.
