Upgrading work in Paphos due to get underway next week
Work is due to get underway on a project next Tuesday, December 22, which will see the upgrading of the centre of Paphos old town, along with Kennedy Square, according to Paphos municipality.
The work which will see the regeneration of the old town has long been a priority for local businesses and other organisations, who have welcomed the news.Nasos Hadjigeorgiou, the head of the Paphos regional board of tourism said: “This is a very positive development and we are happy to see that finally, Paphos will have an upgraded old town centre which will only add to the enjoyment of the area for visitors and locals.”
Mayor of Paphos, Phedonas Phedonos, warned that the municipality will not accept any requests by contactors to extend the deadline for the work, stressing that none of the plans may be changed without the approval of the municipal council, and even then, only if it is seen as essential.
“What happened in previous times are long gone,” he said referring to instances of corruption, bribery, fraud and mismanagement, which resulted in the imprisonment of the town’s previous mayor, Savvas Vergas.
Phedonos signed the relevant paperwork with contractors, Zemco Constructions Ltd; the project has a price tag totalling €5,576,917.
The mayor said that the project will be completed by the end of 2016, and delivered before January 1st 2017, when Paphos becomes the official European Cultural Capital.
FREE PARKING OVER FESTIVE PERIOD
Free parking will be offered in areas of Paphos old town over the festive period, to try to encourage shoppers and visitors to the area.
Paphos Municipality announced that from Saturday, December 19 until Wednesday, January 6, 2016, parking will be free a car parks and spaces including: the municipal market, Caravella car park, Makarios III Avenue, Kanaris and the Municipal Library.
In addition, street parking will be available at Evagoras Pallikarides Avenue, Nicodemus Mylonas, Thermopylae and Gladstonos.
The initiative will be monitored by municipality traffic wardens.
